The evening of May 21, 2013, at 5:00pm sharp, Auburn Gresham high school youth, including Perspectives Leadership Academy and High School of Technology, St. Leo, and Robinson (Englewood), were sited marching from their schools, carrying colorful and impactful signs. They were headed to the northwest corner of 79th and Racine, to hold a "Rally for Peace". Not because parents and teachers forced them to...because they care about restoring and maintaining peace in the community, where they live and attend school.
Many of the youth leaders in attendance participate in The ARK of St. Sabina youth programs, under the direction of Jocelyn Jones, Executive Director. The ARK youth, staff and families wore bright yellow shirts to to emphasize the important work they are doing supporting anti-violence and peace in the streets. This is one event they sponsored, as part of "I Care for Peace Week".
Youth from each school selected a representative to share remarks about their concern and hope for peace in the community. A really compelling message to the on-lookers of residents and visitors of Auburn Gresham was found on the back of bright yellow t-shirts. Simply stated across the top, "Do You Care?" Campaign. A big question to reinforce the campaign, boldly noted in the middle of the t-shirt, for all of us to think about, "Do You?
