Community Violence Prevention Program Youth Employment Program Mentor Job Description
Employment Term: 4/28/14 - 8/22/14
Wage: $11.25/hour (270 hours over 17 weeks. Hours vary by week.)
Reports To: YEP Coordinator _______________________________________________________________________________________________
I. OVERVIEW OF JOB FUNCTION
Mentors will be recruited and hired to provide mentoring to youth hired through the Youth Employment Program. Mentors will create sustained relationships with youth for the duration of the program. Youth and Mentors will jointly engage in periodic, culturally relevant community outreach activities during implementation
II. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Mentors are responsible for supervising, mentoring and monitoring youth assigned to them; providing support to youth during their period of employment; and supervising and monitoring youth during community outreach activities. They are also required to follow all instructions given by the YEP Program Coordinator.
Mentors will:
- Participate in all required mentor training
- Attend the 40 hours of youth job readiness training
- Plan and coordinate mentoring activities
- Provide mentoring to youth as determined by the YEP Manager and Coordinator
- Serve as a point of contact for mentee/employer relationship
- Monitor youth employment timesheets
- Participate in community outreach events with youth
- Assist with youth orientations and trainings, as need
III. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE)
- Complete online employment application (www.ilnri.org)
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Some college or post-secondary education preferred (not required)
- Experience working with youth, preferably in a mentoring capacity
- Pass a criminal background and child abuse check
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word
- Experience with public speaking
