Chicago Job Vacancies Rise at the Fastest Rate in Court Reporting

Budding court reporters in Auburn Gresham should head to Chicago, Illinois, where there is a wealth of job opportunities available and money to be made. This is according to Peg Sokalski-Dorchack, Program Director of Court Reporting at MacCormac College - home to the oldest court reporting program in the United States.

A study carried out by Ducker Worldwide, an independent consulting and research firm, revealed that Illinois is set to experience the greatest demand for court reporters, alongside California, Texas and New York. Indeed, by 2018, there will be 5,500 new court reporter jobs across the nation.

Rewards abound for court reporters that graduate from the two-year associate degree program at MacCormac College, a premier program of its kind in the State of Illinois.

“The job market for court reporters is exploding. If you’re thinking about getting into this industry, this is the best time, and the best opportunities are for graduates from an accredited court reporting program like ours,” stated Dr. Marnelle Alexis Stephens, President of MacCormac College.

Ducker reports that the average beginning salary for a court reporter is $43,000 and according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the growth rate for court reporting salaries is expected to increase by 14 per cent through the year 2020. Furthermore, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Handbook, 2012 reveals that top performing court reporters have the potential to earn over $100k a year.

“As far as the potential for employability for MacCormac students with a court reporting degree goes, it is not a question of if they get a job; it is a question of where they would like to work. There is just a lot of work in this field.  Reporters do well financially in Chicago,” says Sokalski-Dorchack.

“In this day and age earning a degree of any kind is not a choice – it’s a requirement,” asserts President Alexis Stephens. “Completing a court reporting degree program is undoubtedly a wise and promising step toward a lucrative future.”
