Just one month after the Eviction Moratorium was lifted in Illinois, we celebrate National Landlord Day; yet after a year of economic hardship, landlords now may face eviction battles with tenants. In Chicago, about 70% of rental units are owned by small- and mid-sized landlords, and being independent property owners, many of these landlords depend on their tenants’ rent to pay their bills. However, many tenants are still struggling financially, pushing landlords into the eviction process.
Serving as a resource to landlords, local organization Spanish Coalition for Housing (SCH) has been assisting landlords throughout the pandemic and continues to do so as many face the burden of tenant eviction. To help landlords, SCH offers a variety of programs that aim to reduce the occurrence of back rent and evictions while also promoting stable housing and tenancy, such as free virtual workshops.
One of SCH’s free workshops is offered through its Community Alliance partnership and connects landlords to CHA’s Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program. Through the HCV Program, landlords are better positioned to have reliable rent payments, lower vacancy rates, free property inspections and even a potential reduction in property taxes.
Additionally, SCH helps landlords through its Chicago Bilingual Landlord Association (CBLA), which provides a network of education and services to landlords. Members learn about their rights, tenants’ rights, the legal requirements of renters, the eviction process and conflict resolution. Furthermore, CBLA members have access to one-on-one counseling, rental applications, leases and low-cost tenant screening tools including credit and background checks.
If you are a landlord seeking resources or are facing tenant evictions, feel free to reach out to SCH for help via email (help@sc4housing.com) or call (North Region: 773-342-7575; Southwest region: 312-850-2660; Southeast Region: 773-933-7575).
