The Winning Shot

Calil waiting on the ball

The Westcott Elementary School summer mini-camp is a needed sports outlet for pre-K to third grade children. It’s a great way for the kids to learn new things and let off steam. My role this summer is a 2013 Digital Youth Summer Jobs (DYSJ) reporter for  www.auburngreshamportal. I was at Westcott with other teen reporters to cover the mini-camp sport sessions. While we were there, I played basketball and coached two little boys name Calil and Alex. They were 3rd graders who played really good for their age! They also really liked to have fun. They loved playing basketball and I enjoyed playing with them.

Thier reason for loving basketball? Like all kids, they really like to run around. They had tons of energy and the potential to become even better basketball players. I could tell they practiced alot from how good they were at shooting the ball in the basket. We played a game and they beat me (of coures they won, it was two against one). Being able to see them enjoy the game, and interact with me as a mentor was more victorious than them shooting the winning shot.
