Electric Supply Costs for ComEd Customers Set to Decrease on June 1

Company launches informative video explaining electricity rates

CHICAGO (June 1, 2015) – As summer heat approaches, ComEd is reminding residential customers who purchase their supply from ComEd that beginning June 1 they will see a rate decrease on the energy supply portion of their electric bill. To help customers understand this development, ComEd today unveiled a new animated video that explains electricity rates.

ComEd’s electricity supply charges are projected to decline from an average of 6.58 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to 6.01 cents per kWh, which represents an 8 percent decline. ComEd passes along the actual energy supply costs without any mark-up or profit. Starting in June, customers will pay a total of approximately 13.2 cents per kWh, including energy supply, transmission and delivery.

“With the start of the warmer season, these lower supply prices and the many energy efficiency measures we offer provide ComEd customers an opportunity to save on their summer electric bills,” said Val Jensen, senior vice president, Customer Operations.

ComEd recently redesigned its monthly bill to help customers better understand the difference between energy supply and delivery charges and to compare usage and costs over time. The animated video being released today highlights the new bill design and explains how the company’s primary role today is focused on delivering electricity to nearly 4 million customers in northern Illinois. “It’s important to ComEd that our customers understand what they are paying for in their monthly electric bill. Building on our new, simplified bill format, we’re excited to introduce this new video, which attempts to relay complex information in a clear way,” said Jensen.

With the new energy supply rates, the average monthly residential bill will be about $86. This will decline again to an average of $85 when ComEd’s new delivery rates take effect in January 2016, based on the company’s most recent rate request to the ICC reflecting a decrease of approximately $50 million compared to 2015. This was ComEd’s second delivery rate decrease since the smart grid law was enacted in 2011. The delivery service rate reduction is the result of a number of factors, including continued focus on strong cost management and operational efficiencies from having a stronger, more reliable grid with fewer outages.
